MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Officials with the State Department announced up to $5 million in rewards for information leading to the capture of two terrorists including Omar Hammami, a former Alabama resident.
Officials said on Wednesday, that the rewards are being offered for information leading directly to apprehension or conviction of Hammami and Jehad Mostafa, alleged al-Shabaab supporters and current FBI Most Wanted Terrorists.
Hammami was indicted originally in the Southern District of Alabama in 2007 on terrorism violations. A superseding indictment was returned against Hammami in 2009 on terrorism violations for leaving the United States to join the Somalia-based terrorist organization, al-Shabaab.
He is alleged to have provided material support to terrorists as early as 2006.
In December 2007, a federal warrant was issued by a United States District Court for Hammami's arrest.
The FBI says Mostafa is sought for his alleged terrorist activities, and acting as an operating member of al-Shabaab, a Somalia-based terrorist organization. In 2009, a District Court issued a federal arrest warrant based upon a federal grand jury indictment of Mostafa.
The indictment charges Mostafa with providing material support to the same terrorist organization.
