WHITEHOUSE FORK, Ala. - A woman described as the heart of her school has passed away. The principal succumbed after spending three weeks in the hospital. Now, a community is remembering a motivated educator.
Leah Ann Overstreet was the principal of Delta Elementary School. Friends and co-workers say she was always outgoing.
"Every morning she was right out front, greeting the students, giving them a hug telling them she hoped they had a great day," said friend and co-worker Kristy Weatherford.
But Wednesday, the day started out differently at the school. Flowers had been laid around the flag pole, a parking spot remained empty, and the person many were used to seeing everyday wasn't there.
Overstreet was known for many things, mostly her devotion to the children, who affectionately called her Mrs. "O".
"What impressed me the most is that she always wanted what was best for the school. She was constantly writing grants and getting the teachers to write grants so we could get the latest and greatest for our school," Weatherford said.
Overstreet had been hospitalized for around three weeks. Family members said she just couldn't get better. Overstreet took a turn for the worse Tuesday morning, and died in the afternoon.
Those at the school said the question was brought up as to whether school should be canceled. The overwhelming vote was absolutely not. Mrs. "O" would want her kids to be taken care of.
School Superintendent Dr. Faron Hollinger said it is a devastating loss to the school system.
"She optimized everything we've looked for not only as an administrator but a good, decent, human being," said Hollinger.
Back at Delta hugs were given, tears were shed, but those who knew Mrs."O" best, said they know exactly what to do.
"We're going to do what she would want us to do which would be strive for excellence," said Weatherford.
Overstreet's legacy will not be forgotten. A principal, motivator, and friend: the heart of Delta Elementary.
Services for Overstreet will be held at First Baptist Church of Bay Minette. The wake will be held Friday, Oct. 30, from 5:00-9:00 p.m. The funeral will be held Saturday, Oct. 31, at 11:00 a.m.
