MOBILE, Ala. - Some amazing students really know what Christmas is all about. One after another, students at St. Paul's Episcopal School unloaded a bus stuffed full of gifts.
The gifts weren't for themselves, or even for friends or families. The students went shopping for children they don't even know. They are sponsoring hundreds of children from the Volunteers of America's "Caring Tree." The children on the tree are separated from their families through no fault of their own, so they need a little help celebrating the season.
The St. Paul's students went above and beyond to make sure the holidays are special this year. They say they really enjoyed doing it.
"It's the most gratifying thing for me to see the children's faces light up when they see their Christmas present. See that their parents really do care about them even though they can't go out and buy them Christmas presents," said Leighton Silverstein, a senior at St. Paul's.
The project has actually doubled in size this year; they sponsored more children than they ever have before. Organizers say it's a great way to learn about helping others.
Leslie Lerner with St. Paul's said, "It is our hope for our students to be able to give back to our community for those who are less fortunate. It's very important at St. Paul's that we instill in them the desire to help those in need and those less fortunate."
This isn't the only way these students give back. They actually work all year to help those in need. Here's the great part: you can do what these students are doing. It's very easy to get involved, and it's all right here on our website. You can find all kinds of ways to get involved and help others this season.
FOX10 is working with the Volunteers of America throughout the holiday season. We will continue to show you what a difference one person, one group, one good can make. We really hope you will get involved.
