MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Mardi Gras has come to end and clean up efforts were in full swing Ash Wednesday morning. More than 150,000 people crammed into downtown Mobile Fat Tuesday, leaving plenty of trash in their wake.
Mounds of trash and broken beads could be seen in Bienville Square and along Dauphin Street. When people arrived to work, the trash was a little shocking.
"Well, I work downtown and this is an annual thing, and it's a part of Mardi Gras, so... It's disturbing and it's unsettling, it's not pleasant, but it is what it is," said Nancy Konrad.
Some thought the trash would be picked up by the time the sun rose.
"It's pretty shocking. I thought they'd have it cleaned up by now. But it looks like they are working on it," said a worker arriving to downtown.
Crews from the Mobile Public Works Department were out early Wednesday morning cleaning up the mess. Along with crews on the ground, street sweepers are out picking up the remnants of Fat Tuesday fun.
"Normally when we come up everything is kind of piled up in one section, but it's all scattered this year, it's everywhere!" said Jerome Leland with Mobile Parks and Recreation.
Sanitation crews were also out early taking on one of the biggest jobs - cleaning up all the Port o Potty's.
In the past, crews have picked up everything from couches to mattresses. This year some jewelry and even a little cash was found among the trash.
