Atmore woman killed by lightning strike

ATMORE, Ala. - Lightning from this week's strong storms killed an Atmore woman. Dawn Yoder's family and friends call her a selfless woman with a strong sense of faith.

The Mennonite Christian Fellowship is mourning the loss of one of its members it's a loss felt by the entire town of Atmore. Dawn Yoder was struck by lighting Monday while taking out the trash.

Yoder was taken off of life support Wednesday. Carl Martin said Dawn Yoder was devoted to her family and God. " A life of service to God is a life of service to others, and that as we bless God with out lives, we are indeed blessing others too," shared Pastor Carl Martin.

David Yoder said his sister in law will be missed by the family. He hopes the life she lead will be a testament to others.

"She was able to articulate her faith and what she believed in very clearly," said Yoder. "The thing is it goes beyond that, she lived that out in practical ways."

Pastor Martin said the family is relying on its faith to get them through this difficult time. Jon Yoder was a well known doctor in town, and a black wreath now hangs on the door of his office. Beside the black wreath a simple statement, "Dr. Yoder's office is closed due to the death of his wife. A woman many in Atmore considered their friend."

Even in death Yoder is still giving her family is donating her organs. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Atmore Christian School.
