Suspect dies after chase with trooper

Trooper struggled with suspect

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A suspect died after a chase with an Alabama State Trooper early Wednesday morning.

The chase began at approximately, 12:40 a.m. Wednesday. A state trooper attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding along Schillinger Road at U.S. 98 in Mobile County. The trooper ran a check of the tag and learned that the vehicle, a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche, had been reported stolen from Prichard late Tuesday night.

The trooper continued to pursue the suspect trying to get him to pull over.  After a brief pursuit, the vehicle turned onto Howell's Ferry Road and then into a residential neighborhood. The suspect stopped near the intersection of Scottsdale Drive and Carlisle Drive.

The trooper reported the suspect ran from the vehicle and a struggle ensued. Mobile Police responded to the scene, EMS was called, and the suspect was taken to Providence Hospital in Mobile, where he was pronounced dead. The suspect has not been identified. The trooper received superficial injuries.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident. The Department of Public Safety also has initiated an internal inquiry conducted by the agency's Office of Inspections.
