MOBILE, Ala. - The suspect, 18-year-old Richard Hollingsworth, was walked to a waiting police car, shortly before 10:00 Wednesday morning.
He talked to officials about shooting Mobile Police Officer Brandon Sigler, "I was scared, I saw a gun. He wasn't wearing a badge," said Hollingsworth. "The guy told us to leave with a gun on his hip. I pulled out a pistol and shot him."
Deputy Chief James Barber said Sigler was shot one time in the chest.
It happened at Tyler Ridge Apartments, where Sigler lived and acted as a courtesy officer. Investigators say Sigler was trying to break up a disturbance in the parking lot, when Hollingsworth killed him.
"I don't think he ever saw it coming. If he did it was way too late, he died with a holstered weapon," said Barber.
Sigler, who was 26, had been with the Department for less than two years. "He was just a good officer, a person that really cared and wanted to serve. That sought a career in law enforcement and he was doing what he was sworn to do, protect people and keep the peace," added Barber.
The 18-year-old suspect wants to ask Sigler's family for forgiveness. "I'm sorry. I'll never be able to say it enough," said Hollingsworth.
Hollingsworth was initially charged with one count of Murder and Possession of Marijuana 2nd Degree. Hollingsworth was transported to Baldwin County Jail. The other two detainees were questioned and released.
Further investigation and consultation with the District Attorney’s Office regarding gathered evidence has resulted in Capital Murder and Possession of an Altered Firearm charges being brought against Hollingsworth.
Investigation has also revealed the weapon used during this incident is a blue finish, LCP .380 Ruger semi-automatic handgun that was reported stolen from the personal vehicle of a Mobile County Sheriff’s Deputy in July of 2008.
The investigation of this incident remains continuous and further information will be provided as it becomes available.
