If you've been wanting to get involved with local animal shelters, but you didn't know how to do it, now is the time. The 2nd Alabama Week for the Animals is Saturday, March 5 through Sunday, March 13, 2011.
Alabama Week for the Animals is a week set aside to raise awareness about the homeless dog and cat population. The week also highlights the dogs and cats in local shelters that need a forever home. It is part of an effort by Animal World USA.
The Alabama Week for the Animals team is actively organizing events and working with shelters and organizations daily across the state. Hopes are, that many life-saving and life-changing events will happen during this week to forever change communities, and raise awareness about pet overpopulation in Alabama.

The Baldwin County Humane Society, also known as BARC!, is having a giant yard sale to pay for Medical Expenses for shelter dogs and cats Saturday, March 5th at United Methodist Church. The church is located at 1900 Gulf Shores Parkway in Gulf Shores. Your donations are needed for the yard sale. BARC! needs items that are clean and usable, that may not be useful to you and your family any longer. Contact the BARC! office at 251.928.4585 to arrange a pickup time. Proceeds from the sale will help care, feed and meet medical needs of dogs and cats like Autumn, a Labrador Retreiver/Golden Retreiver mix who was rescued from a local kill-shelter and required major leg surgery immediately. Feral Cat Frenzy Spay Day happening Saturday, March 5th. The Azalea City Cat Coalition is asking you to help contril the cat population by spaying feral cats in our area. The Baldwin County Humane Society is offering “Pawsitive” Therapy Tuesday, March 8th, from 10:00 am-2:00 pm at Oakwood Nursing Home in Bay Minette, Golden Living in Fairhope, and William F. Green VA Home in Bay Minette. Since 1993 the pet therapy program has been making visits to nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Baldwin County. PAWSITIVE THERAPY needs volunteers with friendly pets that are up to date on their vaccinations, and who get along well with people and other pets. Baldwin Animal Control/Shelter is offering half price Adoption Days. During the month of March, the Baldwin County Animal Shelter is offering 1/2 price adoptions on all dogs. Until March 26th, you can adopt any dog over 6 months of age for just $30. The adoption fee includes a spay/neuter surgery and a microchip. The shelter closes at noon on Saturdays.
The Mobile SPCA will hold a Benefit for their Spay-Neuter Program. There will be a Spay-ghetti Dinner at Our Savior Catholic Church, located at 1801 Cody Road in Mobile on Thursday, March 10th from 5:30 to 8:30pm. Your $10 donation includes a spaghetti dinner, salad, bread, tea and dessert. There will also be live music by Flatrock, and door prizes and raffles. Wine and beer will also be available. Call 633-3531 for advanced tickets or information. Tickets will also be available at the door. All proceeds will benefit the spay-neuter program.
BARC! is having their Spring Kitten Prevention Promotion starting Friday, March 12th, and running all month long. In an effort to reduce the spring kitten explosion, they are offering $30 vouchers for spaying/neutering of cats to Baldwin County residents, regardless of your income. There’s no limit on how many vouchers you can buy. Voucher sales continue thru March 31, 2011, or whenever 500 have been sold. The Friends of the Mobile Animal Shelter are having a pet adoption Saturday, March 12th from 10:00am until 2:00pm at B&B PetStop, located at the intersection of CottageHill Rd & University Blvd. All pets available for adoption have been vet checked, spayed or neutered, microchipped and have received their age appropriate shots. The Azalea City Cat Coaltion will have an adoption Saturday, March 12th from10 am-3pm at Petsmart, located at 3980 Airport Blvd. Azalea Cat Council will have loving cats and kittens available for adoption.
