A lot of people are driving long distances this time of year, and David Greene from Greene and Phillips has some tips to pass along that will help ensure you get to where you're going safely. The first thing is to make sure your vehicle has been properly maintained. It’s very important you check the tread on your tires and your tire pressure before you leave on a long trip, as well as your windshield wiper fluid and other general maintenance items.

You can make your trip significantly safer if you plan your travel time around heavy traffic times in big cities. You'll also want to plan your drive time during daylight hours if possible so you can see potential hazards in the road more easily.

During a long drive it’s easy to get tired. David says you shouldn't plan to travel so far in a day that you’ll be super tired. If you start getting tired, take a break from the road and walk around a rest area.

You might also want to stop at a convenience store and get something to drink with caffeine. And if you're too tired to drive, stop at a hotel, or at a rest area for a quick nap.Too many accidents start with drowsy drivers, and David says nearly half of all fatal traffic accidents are single vehicle crashes often where drivers have fallen asleep at the wheel.

If you run into nasty weather, slow down. Give yourself plenty of time and distance to react to the traffic around you. Let impatient and aggressive drivers pass you or go through the intersection ahead of you so that you are in control the situation.

Distractions like talking on the phone and texting can very quickly lead to horrible accidents. If someone is in the car with you, let them talk to the person on the phone or respond to the text. Also, let the person riding with you adjust the radio or heater. As the driver you need to be focused on the road.

Greene and Phillips has an app that could help you if you are involved in an accident. If you have the app, if you are involved in an accident, you can quickly find out exactly what the steps you should be taking.
