As the temperatures rise, a lot of people will head to the pools! David Greene from Greene & Phillips says drowning is the second leading cause of accidental injury-related death among children ages 1-14. That's why no child, even if he or she knows how to swim, should be left to swim without a responsible adult watching them.
If you have a pool, you should you have a fence around it. If you don't have a fence around your pool, you can be held responsible for posing a risk to everyone in your neighborhood.
David Greene says parents should let their kids know that running around the pool can be very dangerous, and horse-playing in the pool can result in serious injury. Only swim when there’s a lifeguard present, and don’t dive into water if you don't know how deep it is. You should also stay out of the water if you hear or see lightning.
If you are an adult and you're watching kids swim, get the child out of the pool if something bad does happen and call 911 immediately. Be sure you know the exact address of where the pool is located. It's also valuable to know CPR. Many pool related injuries are very time specific.
If you have a pool or have children near pools, Greene says CPR is an invaluable skill for you to have. He says you should make sure you get certified or if you haven’t been to a course recently, get re-certified.
Greene says in most every instance of anyone being injured at a pool you probably have a case. A lawyer who handles personal injury claims can tell you if you have a property liability case. Public pools may not be adequately staffed. A private pool owner may not have a fence around the pool or appropriate safety equipment.
If you believe you have a case, you can contact the lawyers at Greene & Phillips.
