MOBILE, Ala. - Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran said it's much safer to use credit and debit cards when you're shopping during the holidays.

The sheriff said some crooks will prey on shoppers during the holidays and when given the chance, they may try to steal your purse or wallet.

The Sheriff said that's why it's a good idea for you to shop with credit and debit cards instead of cash.

"Paying for something in cash makes it a little more difficult to challenge the purchase. So it's best if you can use something such as a credit card or debit card where it gives you documentation of when you purchased it and who you purchased it from," Cochran said.

If someone steals cash from you, it's gone. If someone steals your credit or debit card, you can immediately report the theft to your credit card company or bank.

"Also, if your credit cards are stolen, it aids us in law enforcement tremendously to be able to catch that person if they utilize that stolen credit card," said Sheriff Cochran.

Sheriff Cochran also said it's smart to sign the back of your credit cards. He said that's just extra security because when you don't sign the back of a card, the clerk is supposed to check your I.D.
