MOBILE, Ala. - For the last four years, Community with a Purpose has surprised families with delicious home-cooked meals. One surprised family was the Mitchell family.
Beatrice Mitchell has lived in the Maysville community for more than 40 years. Traditionally, her family meets at her house for Thanksgiving.
"I got about 40 grandkids, 36 great-grandkids, and 7 of my own," explained Mitchell.
Neighbors told Community with a Purpose about the Mitchell family and how Beatrice might be deserving of a surprise meal. The grass-roots organization was started by Moses Parker and Stanley Robinson, both of whom are happy to pay it forward.
"It's rewarding and makes you feel good. It's like mom used to do. I'm keeping it going," said Parker.
"We are reaching out to the community. We just need everybody to ride on that train and it'll be even better," Robinson adds.
All of the food delivered is homemade. Robinson, his wife, Sheila, and his sisters-in-law, Kathleen Moore and Glenda Nodd, spent hours creating Thanksgiving for others. The money to cook the food is also homegrown.
"It's still coming from me and Moses' pockets," said Robinson, "but we look forward to this day every year."
