If you're planning to hit the highway this holiday, you're not alone. More than 38 million Americans are expected to get behind the wheel this Thanksgiving.
It's easy to see the holiday travel season has begun. Cars crowd the highways, heading to destinations near and far.
Many people stopped at a Mississippi Welcome Center to stretch their legs, walk the dog or get a cup of coffee.
The Whitfield family stopped on their way to the Lone Star state. For them, it's an annual event.
"Coming from Georgia to Houston, Texas to see my youngest son," said Whitfield.
The Westover family is in for the long haul, they started in Idaho. Their daughter, Beth, is in the Navy and this Thanksgiving is extra special.
"Never know when we'll have a last vacation just the four of us," said Miriam Westover.
The family of four is heading to New Orleans for Thanksgiving.
Workers at the Mississippi Welcome Center said things got off to a slow start but travel is starting to pick up. AAA estimates more than 38 million Americans will travel over the holiday weekend.
Someone who knows a thing or two about traveling is retired pilot Paul Davies. Yet this holiday, he's keeping his feet on the ground.
Davies sits in the back of his SUV, wrapped in a blanket and wearing headphones.
"I like all my equipment makes traveling easier. I started driving in South Carolina at 4:20 this morning," said Davies.
When we caught up with them, they'd been driving for seven hours.
The Davies, like millions of other travelers, will spend long hours on the road but they said it's all worth it for the holidays.
