PENSACOLA, Fla. - Coloring, cutting, and highlights, is how James Amerson pays the bills. But his hobby is what brings him attention. His pictures of local wildlife are being seen around the world. They were even featured on CNN for Earth Day.
"It makes me proud. It gives me confidence," Amerson said.
Amerson has been inspired by where he lives, which is Garcon Point. Jutting into Escambia Bay it's a place of spectacular beauty.
"I was really surprised to find out there was so much wildlife in and around my house. We had some red fox that would cross the road when I'm walking my dog. One afternoon it was an alligator that made it's presence known. So every time I take my walks I take my camera with me," said Amerson.
And what he's captured is there for everyone to see, if you just take the time to look.
"Right under your own nose. Because we've all got so busy and caught up and on the internet and watching reality TV. My opinion, I would rather go out and experience reality than sit on the couch and watch it," he said.
Like many places though, the natural beauty of Escambia Bay sits in stark contrast to man's industrial activities.
"It's an interesting ying and yang where I live. It is
definitely an ecosystem worth fighting for and trying to educate
people about," said Amerson.
