MOBILE, Ala. - There was no sleeping in for some Mobile County students and their parents this Saturday. They were in school.

About a hundred parents turned out for the fourth annual Parent University at Alma Bryant High School Saturday. It's an event to encourage parent involvement and participation.

This week notices were sent home to many parents telling them how to protect their kids from Swine Flu.

Bart Jones is a parent and a teacher in the school system. He said he's not worried about the disease yet. "I think everything's okay. We'll just have to wait and see I guess how it goes." Jones said.

Reginald Eggleston is an assistant superintendent in the school system. He said the Mobile County Public School system remains on alert.

"We have taken a very proactive step in trying to make sure that the general public as well as all of the teachers, administrators, and students are aware of the severity of the Swine flue, and we're just doing everything that we can in order to prevent it here." Eggleston said.

Some of the parents told Fox Ten News they're taking the information about hand washing and other preventive measures serious.

Linda Longmire said it's hard to defense yourself and your children against the rapidly spreading virus. "I mean it's in the air, so we can't really stay away from it, you know." she said.

The Alabama Athletic Association has decided to suspend all high school sporting events because of the virus.

The decision affects a number of games including the State Track and Field Championship in Gulf Shores this weekend.
