MOBILE, Ala. - Mobile Juvenile Judge Edmond Naman feels far too many kids fall through the cracks because parents aren't stepping up. "We spend thousands of dollars on child, but it is all in naught if don't have parental support," said Judge Naman.
A new court aims to fill the gap and hold parents accountable.
It's called the Parent Responsibility Court. It will convene once a
month for parents who have been referred to court by their child's
probation officer for everything from not paying fines, to making
sure the child attends required meetings.
The first time a parent comes to court be allowed to explain
situation, second time a judge might not be so lenient. The parent
could ultimately face jail time but Judge Naman said that's a last
resort. He said it's about building stronger families.
"We have the ability to make a difference in a child's life, but
parent has to take step with us," added Judge Naman.
Judge Naman said the Parent Responsibility court is designed
to make sure they take that step. The first docket will be held in
February. Parents who don't show up could be arrested for failure
to appear.
