QUINCY, Fla. (AP) - A law enforcement official says Florida prosecutors are considering charging Marcus Shrenker with two federal crimes: making a false distress call and recklessly letting his plane crash.
The Indiana investment manager is listed in fair condition in a Tallahassee hospital. U.S. Marshals apprehended him last night at a Northern Florida campground, where he was found bleeding from a slashed wrist. They describe the gash as "very serious at the time" and say he resisted first aid.
He's expected to remain in the hospital another day, then be sent to a county jail pending extradition to Indiana.
The owner of the campground says Schrenker arrived Monday night on his motorcycle.
Schrenker is suspected of deliberately crashing his plane to fake his own death. Authorities says he parachuted to the ground in Alabama, where he'd stashed a motorcycle.
Authorities in Indiana have issued an arrest warrant for Schrenker on felony fraud charges involving his financial businesses.
