Ala. to get $1.5M for smoking cessation

Federal funds part of wellness awards

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama will get $1.5 million in federal funds to increase physical activity, improve nutrition, reduce obesity, and decrease smoking.

The money is part of $119.5 million in comity prevention and wellness awards handed out this month across the nation.

Alabama will get $766,182 for efforts in nutrition, physical activity, and tobacco control.

The state will use $830,666 to expand tobacco cessation programs.

The money is part of recovery act funds distributed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
