2nd inmate from Birmingham killings dies in prison

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Both men sentenced to death for five killings in a Birmingham bar have now died in prison.

State prison system spokesman Brian Corbett says Andrew Anthony Apicella died Monday afternoon in the infirmary at Donaldson Correctional Facility in Jefferson County. The 55-year-old inmate suffered from liver disease.

Co-defendant Stephen Pilley died on Feb. 3, 2009, from liver disease. He was 53.

The two men were sentenced to death for the 1994 execution-style slaying of five people at the Changing Times Lounge in Birmingham. The five victims were shot in the head.

Corbett says Apicella served more than 15 years and seven months on death row. He had appeals pending during that time.

Killed in the bar were Pamela Dodd, Lester Dodd, William Nelson Sr., James Watkins and Florence Elliott.
