HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — A soldier and his wife are questioning whether their homeowners association has authority to tell them to remove an American flag flying outside their condominium.

William Weir and his wife Lauren say they received a notice from their homeowners association asking them to remove a flag flying outside their house as soon as possible because it violates community regulations. Lauren Weir says she questions the association's authority because of the Freedom to Wave the American Flag Act — which was signed into law in 2006.

WAFF-TV reports (http://bit.ly/15NWlbu ) the couple posted a photo of the flag and notice on Facebook and supporters protested outside the condominium Tuesday. The president of the homeowners association says she is also a veteran and she's received about 2,000 emails in support of the Weirs.
