Summary of action in Alabama Legislature

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A summary of action in the Alabama Legislature on Tuesday, the eighth meeting day of the legislative session:

HOUSE:

—Approved a bill to make it a crime to fail to report within "a reasonable time" that a child is missing.

—Passed a bill that authorizes warrantless arrests of people trespassing on school property. Goes to Senate.

SENATE:

—Did not take up a school flexibility bill as originally planned by Senate leaders because three senators were absent.

—Approved a proposed constitutional amendment to protect the display of the Ten Commandments and other historic documents in public buildings. Goes to House.

—Approved a $25 million bond issue to provide money to counties that can't afford to put up a matching share for highway and bridge projects requiring 20 percent local funding. Goes to House.

—Gave final passage to a local bill to allow school employees in Franklin County to train to be reserve sheriff's deputies. Goes to governor.

AGENDA:

—Senate Finance and Taxation-Education Committee meets at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in room 727 of the Statehouse to consider a bond issue for technical education.

—Senate Tourism and Marketing Committee meets at 2 p.m. Wednesday in room 610 to consider legislation to build a hotel and conference center at Gulf State Park.

—Senate Education Committee and House Education Policy Committee meet together at 3 p.m. in room 807 to consider legislation repealing the Common Core Standards for public schools.

—Senate Fiscal Responsibility and Accountability Committee meets at 3:30 p.m. in room 727 to consider a bill providing for drug testing of welfare recipients.

—House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee meets at 9 a.m. in room 418 to consider legislation that places certain requirements on manufacturers of storm shelters.

—House Economic Development and Tourism Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. in room 418 to consider legislation to build a hotel and conference center at Gulf State Park.

—House Judiciary Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. in room 123 to consider legislation that would only allow one criminal sex offender to stay in a residence.

—House Agriculture and Forestry Committee meets at 3:30 p.m. In room 410 to consider a bill that would create the crime of aggravated cruelty to animals.

—House meets at 9 a.m. Thursday and Senate meets at 11 a.m.
