MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Forecasters say parts of southwest Alabama could receive as much as 5 inches of rain, creating a potential for flooding headed into the weekend.

The threat has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood watch extending through Friday night for the southwestern corner of the state and the tip of the Florida Panhandle.

Forecasters are expecting several rounds of heavy rainfall as waves of low pressure move along a stalled cold front.

The ground already is saturated with water from previous rains, and streams are elevated. The weather service says that increases the chances of flooding in southwest Alabama.

Forecasters say the flood watch includes the cities of Mobile, Bay Minette, Andalusia, Opp and Brewton.
