MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (WALA) - Just one day after the hostage standoff in Midland City, Ala. came to an end, authorities said investigators are still hard at work.
According to officials, bomb technicians with the FBI, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Dothan Police Department continue to search the crime scene for explosive hazards.
They said two devices were located and disrupted on February 5. Investigators said one device was located inside the bunker, and the other device was located in the plastic pipe suspect Jimmy Lee Dykes told the negotiators to use to communicate with him.
The search for hazards is expected to continue through Wednesday.
When the bomb technicians finish, investigators said Evidence Response Teams will begin to process the scene which could take several days.
Officials said a preliminary investigation indicates the Dykes engaged in a firefight with the SWAT agents who made entry.
They said it also appears that the Dykes reinforced the bunker against any attempted entry by law enforcement.
The sheriff's department and the Alabama Department of Public Safety are working with displaced residents are being considered on a case by case basis so they can take care of animals and other needs.
Authorities stormed an underground bunker Monday in Alabama, freeing a 5-year-old boy who had been held hostage for nearly a week in the tiny underground shelter and leaving the Dykes dead.
Authorities said the shooting review team continues to gather facts regarding the incident.
