Carnival Triumph stalled in Gulf of Mexico after engine fire

NEW ORLEANS (WALA) - Carnival Cruise Lines said the cruise ship Carnival Triumph experienced an engine room fire and lost power Sunday morning, leaving passengers and crew members aboard the stalled ship in the Gulf of Mexico.

Carnival said the automatic fire systems on board the ship extinguished the fire in the aft engine room. No casualties or injuries were reported.

Officials said around 11:30 a.m. that the ship, carrying 4,229 crewmembers and guests, was stalled in the Gulf of Mexico, about 150 miles off the coast of the Yucutan Peninsula. The US Coast Guard had been notified.

The Triumph was on a 4-day cruise that departed Galveston, Tex. on Thursday.
