Fewer people than expected apply for tornado aid

FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) - Officials in northern Alabama say they're surprised by the low number of applications for state assistance for residents who were displaced by the 2011 tornado outbreak.
    
Individuals and families who are qualified can receive up to $25,000 to help them find new homes.
    
Jack Green, chief outcomes officer at Community Partnership of North Alabama, tells The TimesDaily that the number of applicants is about half of what he expected.
    
Green said nearly 200 people have applied, but he thought the number would be closer to 600.
    
People who might be qualified for the assistance face the task of rebuilding or doing major repairs on their house as a result of the tornadoes.
