Flooding causes road, school closings

MONROE COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) - Officials said a flood warning continues in effect for the northern half of Monroe County.  The current warning expires at 6:15 a.m. on Tuesday, but officials said they expect another warning is likely to follow.  

The current projection by the National Weather Service office in Mobile is for another three to five inches of rain over the next 36 hours with some areas receiving higher amounts.  The rain is not expected to taper off until Wednesday, so flooding will continue to be a great concern until at least Wednesday.

Officials said Lambert Road in the Packers Bend Community is closed due to flooding, and County Road 56 just west of the Highway 265 intersection near Chestnut is flooded.  

Additional flooding of roads is expected Monday, Feb 11 and Tuesday, Feb 12.

Everyone is reminded to use caution when driving in these conditions.  

Officials said don’t try to drive through water that is flowing across the roadway or through water that is so deep you cannot see the road. They said remember, “Turn around; don’t drowned.”

Related to the flooding and various road issues, Dr. Murphy, superintendent of Monroe County Public Schools, has decided to close schools for Tuesday, February 12.  Buses were unable to navigate some roads Monday, and it is expected that many more will be dangerous or inaccessible in the morning.
