POARCH CREEK INDIAN RESERVATION (WALA) - The Poarch Creek Indians held their 42nd annual pow wow Thursday, November 22.
Tribes from all over the country come to the reservation to celebrate their American Indian culture.
“It gives the public a chance to come in and see what we do on our reservation,” said Pow Wow Club member Larry Flaurnoy.
Flaurnoy remembers how Poarch Creek celebrated their pow wow more than 40 years ago and said it has grown in popularity.
"We knew we were tribal member, but we were not federally recognized yet. It was a struggle back in those days and it went from everybody coming together and having dinner together to what you see here today,” said Flaurnoy.
Crafts men and women set up tents and shared their art.
Jackie Fisher said she's creek descendent and traveled from North Carolina to connect with other tribes and share her passion for creating art and crafts.
She set up a booth and created a number of crafts including corn shuck dolls.
“I make everything out of things that I harvest or dig or gather, that's my mission to find beauty in nothing.” said Fisher.
