MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Retired Alabama appellate court Judge John C. Tyson III died Friday evening at his Montgomery home. He was 86.
A funeral home spokesman said he died of natural causes.
Tyson was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II and served in the state attorney general's office prior to becoming a judge on the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals. He retired from the court in 1991, ending two decades of service. He also served as a special justice on the state Supreme Court and lectured at the University of Alabama, where he earned his bachelor and law degrees.
Former Gov. John Patterson, who served with him on the criminal appeals court, called him an outstanding judge and one of the finest people he knew.
