MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A measure aiming to stop the rise of metal thefts across the state takes effect Wednesday.

The law makes selling stolen metal valued at more than $250 a Class-C felony punishable by up to 10-years in prison.

New regulations also require businesses that buy scrap metal to make a copy of a photo ID for the seller, get their vehicle description, including license plate number, photograph them and store the information in a statewide database.
