Toomer's oaks have new growth despite poison

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - There's new growth on the poisoned oak trees at Auburn University, but an expert says the Toomer's oaks aren't yet out of the woods.

Auburn horticulturist Gary Keever says the unseasonably warm winter is forcing the trees' metabolism to accelerate.

Keever tells the Opelika-Auburn News the trees' new growth is "encouraging." But he says it doesn't mean the trees are going to survive.

A University of Alabama fan is awaiting trial on charges of poisoning the trees after the 2010 Iron Bowl. Auburn fans traditionally roll the trees with toilet paper after a big win.

Keever says experts should be able to definitively gauge the health of the trees this spring. The school plans to replace the trees if they eventually die.
