MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Several people said they heard gunshots in the area of St. Stephens Road and White Avenue around 8 a.m. Sunday morning.

When police responded to calls in the area, they found 38-year-old Lanelle Jackson inside his car, which was parked in a lot on St. Stephens Road. They said Jackson had been shot several times; he was taken to the hospital where he died.

One man who didn't want to go on camera said Jackson was homeless, and had been sleeping in his car in the area for the past two years.

According to the man, Jackson sometimes did private security work. He returned from a job at a cabaret during the early morning hours Sunday and parked in front of a pickup, truck where he slept.

Mike Jackson, no relation to the victim, lives across the street.

"He was a well liked guy, he was a well like guy, and people don't understand.  We're trying to figure it out. because he didn't have no enemies," Jackson said.

Police haven't come up with a motive either.

"No arrests have been made in that particular case. Right now, detectives are working, trying to determine if anyone saw the incident," Corporal Chris Levy said.

If you have any information on the shooting call Mobile Police at (251) 208-7211.
