BAY MINETTE, Ala. (WALA) - The Baldwin County Sheriff’s office said they shot a man inside his truck after he reached for his weapon during a traffic stop on Sunday.

Stephen Bryan underwent surgery at North Baldwin Infirmary Hospital following the shooting, which occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday on Highway 59 in Bay Minette.

Authorities said Stephen Bryan’s wife had advised authorities that the man had made statements that lead her to believe he may be suicidal following an incident on Saturday, Dec. 15.

The BCSO said they responded to Bryan’s home on Old Brady Road in the Pinegrove community of Baldwin County on Saturday when a neighbor told them Bryan had barricaded himself in a shed at the rear of his residence with a shotgun.

He left before authorities arrived and the BCSO put out a broadcast to be on the lookout for Bryan. After he didn’t comply with an officer’s requests during the Sunday traffic stop, authorities said the officer shot him after Bryan reached for his shotgun in the truck.

Authorities said Bryan’s condition was unknown Sunday and an investigation is underway.
