Baldwin County deputies make large drug bust

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. (WALA) - 100 POUNDS OF POT

Tuesday afternoon Baldwin County deputies displayed 100 pounds of marijuana, in 5 lb sleeves, vacuum-packed and ready for sale. Deputies said it was all found in the car of one man… 58 year-old Jeffrey Lee Hamilton.

Baldwin County Sheriff, Huey “Hoss” Mack, said, “ This is not just somebody that decided to grow a little bit of dope, pick a few leaves, mash it up and take it somewhere to sell it.”

SIMPLE STOP, BIG BUST

Hamilton was pulled over early Tuesday morning for erratic lane changes on I-65. It was when deputies ran his license plate that a simple stop turned into a bust.

“It was learned he had a switched tag. The tag on the vehicle did not belong to the vehicle he was driving,” Sheriff Mack told us/

Investigators believe the marijuana was transferred to Hamilton in Mobile and that will be a continuing part of their investigation.

“We believe the individual picked up the vehicle in Mobile and this was already in that vehicle,” Mack said. “So we do believe that there was an exchange in the Mobile area.”

DRUG PIPELINE

Sheriff Mack said drug busts like these are an important component to fighting drugs.

“We know that cocaine flows this same route. We know that some heroin flows this same route. So it’s a multitude of various drugs flowing from the south to the north via these different interstates,” Sheriff Mack said.

Hamilton is in the Baldwin County jail being held on a one million dollar bond.
