DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) - FLIM-FLAM SCAM
On surveillance video he comes up to buy a box of Kleenex, at the Daphne Walmart, but he’s after much more. The man asks the cashier to break a $100 bill, and what’s called a flim-flam scam begins.
Corporal Jason Vannoy with Daphne PD said, “They’re creating confusion and counting on the cashier to be confused enough to hand over money thinking they are giving the person change.”
In the video, you see the man handling the cash like a black jack dealer, swiping bills back and forth. All the while, crowding the cashier and constantly talking leaving her confused and flustered. And he keeps this up for nearly five minutes.
“I haven’t seen one that’s lasted this long,” Cpl. Vannoy said. “Normally, it’s a quick transaction and the person is in-and-out really fast. This one is different that he stays there for such an extended period of time and continues to ask her to make change for different bills.”
$1,000 DOLLARS LATER
After getting what he wants, the man heads for the door. In his pocket a grand total of $1,000 Police said he’s a real pro that likely has past experience in this type of scam and with holiday crowds on the rise he’ll find more opportunities if he isn’t caught.
“Anytime there’s more confusion or more chaos or people in the store and it’s even more crowded, there’s always an opportunity for people like this to go and steal something,” Cpl. Vannoy told us.
If you recognize the man in the video, please call Daphne police.
