MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The only two witnesses to a murder won't be able to help police because they won't be able to tell them what they saw the day their mother was killed.
Cynthia McCoy's killer remained on the loose Tuesday after she was shot to death inside her apartment on Labor Day, Sept. 3, 2012. The only witnesses to the crime were the victim's two small children.
McCoy's neighbors at Azalea Point Apartments said Monday was the only day they can't remember seeing the 23-year-old.
It was around 12:30 in the afternoon when a friend discovered the woman's body inside her apartment.
"When investigators arrived they found 23 year old Cynthia McCoy was suffering a gunshot wound that was actually the cause of death," Ashley Rains with the Mobile Police Department said.
McCoy's children, toddlers, were covered in their mother's blood, but they were not harmed, according to witnesses.
"I went to go check to see how the baby is doing and one of the police told me the baby was OK," said one neighbor.
Police still haven't released many details about the murder but they do tell us police don't have many leads. They are seeking the public's help to solve this case.
"Anybody within the apartment complex that may have heard or seen something, anybody with information about anybody else that might have information about this homicide," said Rains.
Friends say McCoy, who was originally from Mississippi, had lived in the apartment with her children for more than a year.
One friend, who wished to remain anonymous, spoke highly of her character.
"She's a good friend. She was a sweet person. She was a real friend," they said.
If you have any information about the case call the Mobile Police Department at 208-7211, Crime Stoppers at 208-7000, or text to CRIMES (274637) and include the keyword CRIME 411. Remember, you can remain anonymous.
