DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) - Daphne police are asking for the public's help identifying a man they said may be responsible for several recent vehicle break-ins.  They released surveillance video showing the suspect entering a store where he used a stolen credit card.

Just over the last week, cars have been broken into in Sehoy subdivision, Tiawasee Trace, Historic Malbis and Lake Forest.  Corporal Jason Vanoy with the Daphne Police Department said thousands of dollars worth of items have been stolen, almost all of it from unlocked cars.

“It’s a common crime, especially in this area, but that is an unusually high number,” Vanoy said.

Vanoy believes the man in the surveillance video from the Malbis Chevron station is responsible for at least one vehicle theft from Tuesday night.  The break in the case came when the suspect used a credit card for a gas purchase.

Vanoy said the credit card used in the purchase had just been stolen from a vehicle in Lake Forest a short time earlier.

“Sometime after around 10 p.m. at a house over in Lake Forest a vehicle was left unlocked and this person took two credit cards from the vehicle,” Vanoy said.

Police said the suspect got into this dark colored SUV with silver custom wheels.  They’re hoping the vehicle will look familiar to someone.

Just outside of Daphne in Bay Branch subdivision, Scott Parker’s two cars and one of his neighbor’s were rummaged through overnight as well.  He’s glad to hear that police are closing in on a suspect.

“For that soon for it to happen and this to be that soon happening; yeah, it lets me know that police departments are well on their way to finding out who it’s probably going to be,” said a relieved Parker.

If you can help to identify the man in the video or the owner of the SUV, Daphne Police want to hear from you.  Vanoy says the department plans to step up patrols in the areas that have had the most break-ins.
