MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Gauze remained taped to Stacia Smith’s leg on Monday, covering a dime-sized bullet wound.

Smith,16, was still recovering at home on Monday, March 18 after she said she was shot in her front yard in an incident stemming from an argument over a teenage boy.

MPD confirmed 17-year-old Justin Campbell was arrested in connection to the shooting on Marcus Drive . He is charged with second-degree assault and reckless endangerment.

“When they said he was arrested a smile came over, just happy. Somebody off the street you know? I was just happy he got who shot them,” said a friend of the victim who was present during the shooting.

Smith said her 2, 3, and 14-year-old siblings were outside at the time of the shooting.

“One of the girls got grazed in the knee by a bullet. She was trying to throw my little children, my 2- and my 3 year-old out of the way and my 14-year-old told me a bullet went right past my 2-year-old’s head,” said Smith’s mother.

With her parent’s permission, Smith’s 3-year-old sister described what she saw:

“The boy would start shooting (and) my sister got shot,” the toddler said. “The police came, the firefighters came and take my sister to the hospital. She’s still got a bandage.”
