MOBILE, Ala. (FBI) - The FBI Mobile Division announced Wednesday, November 14 the addition of Omar Shafik Hammami to the Most Wanted Terrorists list. The South Alabama student and Daphne native is wanted in connection with terrorism violations to include providing material support to terrorists.

It is alleged that Hammami also known as “Abu Mansour al-Amriki”, provided material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, known as al-Shabaab. On February 26, 2008, al-Shabaab was designated a terrorist organization by the Secretary of State as a foreign terrorist organization.

Hammami was reported dead last month after he issued a video in March stating his life was in danger because of his disagreements with other militant leaders.

However, the FBI believes Hammami is alive and wants him brought to justice.

In 2009, Hammami was indicted by a Mobile grand jury on terrorism charges.

"Mr. Hammami was indicted by the Southern District of Alabama for terrorism violations including material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization," said the Special Agent in Charge in Mobile Steve Richardson.

Hammami is the 31st person to be added to the FBI's most wanted terrorist list.

"The most wanted list was designated back in 2001 as a way for the FB to increase public awareness for everyone, both nationally and internationally with regard to persons wanted by the FBI in connection to terrorist violations," said Richardson.

Special Agent in Charge Steve Richardson said criteria for making the list is lengthy and it's certainly significant that Hammami was added.

Hammami should be considered armed and dangerous and private citizens should take no independent action against Hammami.

If you have any information concerning Hammami, please contact the FBI’s Tip Line at 1-800-CALL-FBI, or call the FBI Mobile Division, or the nearest American Embassy or Consulate, or submit a tip electronically.
