ATMORE, Ala. (WALA) - The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said a man is in custody after shooting his stepson to death on Pleasant View Drive in Escambia County.

Authorities arrested James Bethea, 54, on a charge of murder after the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, October 13.

They said when they arrived at the home, the 17-year-old male victim was dead on the floor from an apparent gunshot wound. Bethea was still there, armed with a gun.

It happened in Nokomis, near Atmore. They said the shooting was a result of a domestic dispute between Bethea, his wife and the 17-year-old.

After authorities made verbal contact with him, Bethea came out unarmed and surrendered.

Meanwhile, the ECSO has not released the name of the teen at the request of the victim’s family. The case will be presented to an Escambia County grand jury.

Donna and Ron Vile just moved to a home on Pleasant View. But now, their view of the neighborhood won't be the same.

"I look out at his house every time I come out the front door. So, it's going to be real sad,” said Donna Vile.

Another neighbor on Pleasant View Drive, who asked not to be identified, said she is still in shock over the incident. She called 911 soon after the shooting.

"We heard the neighbors come out asking for help. That their family member had just been shot,” she said.

The teen will be remembered by the Viles. They are neighbors who were just beginning to get to know the teen, whom they called reserved and helpful.

"He'll live on with us as long as we live here,” said Donna Vile.
