Investigators: no evidence to support claim

FOLEY, Ala. (WALA) - Baldwin County Investigators aren't buying a Foley woman's claim of self-defense in connection with a shooting this weekend.

Sheriff's Deputies were called to a house on a isolated section of Doc McDuffie Road in Foley around 1 a.m. Saturday in response to a person shot in the head.

The 911 call came from 48-year-old Lisa Williams. Major Anthony Lowery with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office said Williams shot her self-described boyfriend, Drew Lorup, in the head with a .38 caliber pistol.

"She claimed self-defense, that she was actually protecting herself from abuse by him," Major Anthony Lowery said.

Lorup was air-lifted to USA Medical Center where he was listed in serious condition Monday.

According to the sheriff's office, it didn't take investigators long to come up with a different motive. Two witnesses helped them with that.

"At this time, we believe that she went and retrieved the weapon and simply shot the victim as a means to get him out of her life," Lowery said.

Lowery said there is no indication either Williams or Lorup has had any previous criminal charges in Baldwin County.  Williams is charged with first degree domestic violence.

Lowery said investigators couldn't find any evidence at the scene to support Williams claim of self-defense.

"It became clear that while she was trying to justify the shooting she had many chances to de-escalate the situation and leave, and she didn't choose to do that," he said.
