MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Spice is the synthetic marijuana-like product that Alabama Governor Robert Bentley made an illegal substance last year.
Mobile police said they conducted a simultaneous bust on two local convenience stores last night.
They recovered a total of 600 packets of spice worth about $12,000, two guns, and a lot of cash.
"The thing about that is it's going to be the result of drug proceeds that is a lot of money and that's what caught my attention is the amount of cash and at twenty dollars a pack that's a lot of packs," said Corporal Christopher Levy, Mobile Police Public Information Officer.
They arrested Khaled Al Mashini and Khalil Al Mashini at the Pride gas station, 2800 Spring Hill Avenue.
Police said they recovered about $5,000, a Glock pistol and an AR-15 rifle.
"It's a rifle that shoots a powerful round, and it's not generally used for hunting; it is however, used for law enforcement and or sport shooting,” Levy said.
While those arrests were underway, police picked up Ihsah Aydah and Scottie Grey at the BP station just a block away.
There police seized 400 packets of spice and more than $8,000.
"In my opinion that bumps it up to a new level," Levy said.
All four men face various counts of possession and or distribution of a controlled substance.
The stores remained open for business the day following the busts.
A man working at Pride refused our request for an interview.
Mobile Police are still trying to determine how the store clerks got hold of so much product and who they were selling it to.
