MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) - Derrick Myles has been on the run since early Tuesday morning, after he attempted to steal an ATM. Now U.S. Marshals have been brought in to assist in the search for the 24-year-old career criminal.
"There are warrants for his arrest. We have three felony warrants out for him out of Baldwin County at this time," Detective Ric Chenoweth said.
Chenoweth said Myles is wanted in connection with a recent attempted smash and grab at a gas station in Spanish Fort.
"Other than my charges, we are looking at him in several other cases here in the Mobile area as well with the charges I've got on him. He is looking at a lot of jail time if we get him convicted," Chenoweth said.
Police may be closing in on Myles. They spotted him in the Roger Williams Housing Community Thursday night.
"Due to his past history and the people we have talked to, we do know that he has habit of carrying hand guns around. He had one last weekend, so he is considered armed and dangerous," Chenoweth added.
Myles is considered a repeat offender.
He was arrested in 2003 for shooting into an unoccupied vehicle. That case was dropped by the courts.
He was arrested just a month later and charged with the murder of Wesley Ellis. Myles pleaded guilty to manslaughter in that case and was sentenced to 15-years in jail. But, court records show Myles served five years, ten months, and 13 days for that crime. Once out of prison, Myles was arrested for a smash and grab that happened at Cottage Hill and Cody Road in December 2009.
Now Myles is one of two suspects in the most recent smash and grab.
Myles is due in court September 30, 2010 for a hearing on restitution and court costs. He owes more than $8,000.
