MOBILE, Ala. - As it is right now a school resource officer in Mobile County has little more than their voice to diffuse a dangerous situation. Some would like to change that by arming them with Tasers. Ken Megginson, with the Mobile County School Board told us, " This was the next step in looking at what we can do to make sure we provide the best possible tools to ensure security in our schools."
PARENTS REACT
Tasers incapacitate with a jolt of 50 thousand volts. The manufacturer said the voltage is safe for anyone over 60 lbs but some parents aren't convinced. They worry about the judgment of the person who pulls the trigger.
" These days folks will just tase you for no reason, without the proper cause." One parent said.
" Bring the police in. Try to get both parties to calm down and let the police take care of it." Another parent told us.
PROPER TRAINING
Megginson said resource officers would use the Tasers only as a last resort. A last line of defense in a critical situation. " They will have additional training to make sure they understand the safety procedures that need to be followed to use Tasers." he said.
The Mobile County School Board will vote on the Taser issue Monday night. If passed, about 20 Tasers would be bought and training would start soon after.
That school board meeting will be at 6 o'clock Monday night at the central office. If you would like to speak at the meeting get there early to sign up.
