WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama has nominated a black Birmingham lawyer to fill the seat of the first black federal judge in Alabama.

Obama nominated Adbul Kallon on Friday to replace U.S. District Judge U.W. Clemon, who retired.

Kallon, a former law clerk for Clemon, is a partner at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, where he practices labor and employment law.

He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the University of Pennsylvania School of Law. A committee formed by U.S. Rep. Artur
Davis, D-Birmingham, selected Kallon as its first choice for the post.

Clemon became Alabama's first black federal judge in 1980 when appointed by President Carter.
