OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. - One combat control squadron walked the extra mile for fallen comrades, literally. They walked 800 miles to pay their final respects for 12 of our country's heroes.

The airmen's spirits lifted as they walked the last five miles of nearly a thousand mile journey. The airmen weren't even limping, but their feet are blistered and taped up.

The air force combat control squadron walked from Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, to Hurlburt Field in Florida. Their trip started last Wednesday.

"We're doing this to honor Tim Davis and 11 other combat controllers that died during the war on terror," Lt. Sam Shindler said.

The team as a whole walked more than 800 miles, but each member walked about 150. You can tell by their feet, which are blistered and bruised.

The idea started when they wanted to honor their team member, Tim Davis, who was killed in the line of duty back in February. The march only grew with more support.

Davis' mother walked the last five miles with the airmen.

"It's awesome. When I was here, I met a lot of them. They had a memorial for my son, they promised me they'd never forget him, they've kept their word. They're not forgetting him, they're honoring him. I'm in awe," Davis' mother, Sally Sheldon, said.

He's not the only one they're remembering. They're honoring 11 other airmen killed in the war against terror.

In the past two days, they've crossed through Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa Counties.

The group also walked to raise awareness for the Special Operation Warrior Foundation. It raises money for children of fallen soldiers so they can go to college.
