TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida's House Republicans are picking Rep. Steve Crisafulli to be their next speaker.
House Republicans formally voted on Monday to pick Crisafulli as speaker designate.
This means the Merritt Island Republican would become House Speaker in November 2014 if Republicans maintain control. Republicans currently hold a 76-44 margin over Democrats in the 120-member House.
Crisafulli got the spot because Chris Dorworth - who had been slated to become the next speaker - lost his re-election bid last November.
Crisafulli is a real estate broker and agricultural businessman from Florida's Space Coast. First elected to the House in 2008, he has strong roots in Florida politics. He is related to Gov. Doyle E. Carlton, who held that office from 1929 through 1933, and grandson of a Florida Supreme Court chief justice.
