PAXTON, Fla. (WALA) - People will climb to the summit in Paxton, Florida to honor law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.
Paxton is hosting the 2012 Summit for Heroes event Saturday, June 30 at 9 a.m.
Each year, teams across the country climb to the highest point in each state in memory of officers killed in the line of duty. The climb began in 2006. It was founded by Captain Keith McPheeters of the Farmington POlice Department in New Mexico.
According to information on the Summit for Heroes website, “McPheeters reflected on the nature of his occupation, the public’s perception on a police officer’s work, and the effect such a loss has on an officer’s survivors. From these thoughts, the concept of Summit for Heroes took form.”
Last year, more than 750 law enforcement professionals, friends and family took part nationwide.
