GULF SHORES, Ala. (WALA) - The spring break season is here, and there are some new guidelines in place for the beach in Gulf Shores.
The new ordinance requires all tents to be placed north of post markers.
Robert Decurtins and his friends didn't know they were in violation.
"We are from Ole Miss and we are trying to make our little piece of the grove on the beach and we figured we could just set it up and have fun," said Decurtins.
Leaders say there are two main reasons why this policy was put in place.
First, emergency crews can patrol the beach better.
And second, if there is an emergency on the beach, 9-1-1 callers can tell dispatchers exactly where the emergency is because numbers are on the post.
"The tent issue is going to be heavily enforced by our beach patrol and our police department. We want it to be safe and fun for everyone," said Recreation Director Grant Brown.\
The beach patrol will first issue a warning for those in violation. The second time, a $15 citation will be issued.
But Decurtins is avoiding that altogether.
"Now that I know the law, I guess it would be a good idea to move the tent," said Decurtins.
Leaders say this is all to keep everyone safe this spring break season.
The new ordinance was passed about a month ago.
