Concern about economic recovery

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Gulf coast government leaders are still worried that there might be an attempt to divert economic recovery funds from BP fines through a deal negotiated through the U.S. Department of Justice.

A news conference involving local, state and federal officials is scheduled for later this week.

FOX10 News learned that Alabama Governor Robert Bentley will be "unavailable to attend" but his office issued a statement Monday that said in part, “The Governor will oppose any effort by the federal government or by BP to undermine the principle of local control by artificially reducing the amount of money that flows through the Restore act”.

Alabama Senator Richard Shelby will be in Mobile the weekend of October 13-14.  Shelby, one of the authors of the Restore act, opposes any effort to circumvent the law. Shelby is expected to address the issue separately on Sunday.
