Dauphin Island battles with oil spill

DAUPHIN ISLAND, Alabama (WALA) - Governor Bob Riley's plan was to completely boom off Alabama shores, from Dauphin Island to Fort Morgan. That plan would essentially protect everything, however, that plan isn't happening.

A fired up Governor Riley addressed the preventative problems that we are facing.

"The oil is going to get to shore primarily because there is nothing between oil and Dauphin Island. It is going to come ashore. You've got a lot of states vying for same amount of boom," Riley said.

The frustration continues.

Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier said we have to manage what we've got.

"The governor had a real aggressive plan. That material was not available in that quantity so we could do that. Now we have to go back and boom off every nook and cranny which is a detailed and time consuming situation," said Collier.

Collier said he continues to see boom coming in and he is hoping that will continue.

"Our plan is to supplement any crews that are here in place. These people are trained and schooled to clean this up and we are at the mercy that they are going to do their jobs," said Collier.

Collier said he is making sure that everything is done that can be done on his end, and he is trusting along with everyone else, that BP will cover theirs.
